THE FINAL MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FROM RETIRING WORLD ROTARY PRESIDENT BARRY RASSIN

As I look back on all the things I have seen and the people I have met since becoming president of Rotary International lost July, I am certain of this, Rotary’s capacity to transform lives for the better is unparalleled.

I think about the Rotarians I met in Pakistan, who partnered with Coca-Cola to improve sanitation in Karachi’s neighbourhoods while supporting polio eradication efforts. I think about Rotarians who are helping entire communities rebuild their lives after Hurricane Maria. I think about German Rotaractors who are working to save bees. whose role as pollinators is so important to our planet.

It seems like only yesterday that I stood on a stage and asked you to BE THE INSPIRATION in your clubs, in your communities, and in the world. Your response was an inspiration to me. You are paving the way for Rotaractors to become the future leaders, helping start new Rotaract clubs and working to include Rotaractors in Rotary events and projects in your communities.

You are working hard to eradicate polio, participating in 4200 events in more than 100 countries for World Polio Day. And you are carrying out transformative projects that will create lasting change in your communities and in the world.

This year I also saw how Rotary’s work to build peace is bearing fruit. The 98 Rotary Peace Fellows who are studying at our peace centres will soon graduate, joining more than 1200 others in applying their conflict resolution skills to problems that need solutions.

And this month Esther and I will travel to Hamburg, Germany for a convention where people of all races, nationalities, religions, and political backgrounds will unite because they want to make the lives of all people better.

Seeing what Rotary means to people - to the communities we serve and to Rotarians themselves – has deepened my affection and admiration for all that Rotary is and does.

Soon it will be time for Esther and me to return home to Nassau. When we get there, I will look out on the vast sea that surrounds our island, and it will remind me of Rotary’s limitless possibilities, and of the amazing future that awaits us beyond the horizon. I look forward to sailing there with you.

FROM HELEN KELLER
“Literature is my Utopia. Here I am not disenfranchised. No barriers of the senses shuts me out of the sweet, gracious discourse of my book friends.”

FROM FRED HOLLOWS
“The alternative is to do nothing, and that is not an alternative.”

FROM BETH FAGAN QUINN
There is no task large or small that can’t be completed if you set your mind to it. Always remember that you are as strong as you allow yourself to be. When someone says “defeat”, think success – when someone says “lose” think win. When someone says “can’t” think that you can - and if anyone ever tells you that you “won’t” tell them that you most certainly will.

OUR GUEST SPEAKERS ALTERNATED THEIR ADDRESSES

KAREN
Suicide is a difficult subject with many in the community fearful of the word. The activity in respect of Suicide  in SA is by invitation to be addressed in Sydney next week and Melbourne in July.  John Dawkins is charged with the responsibility of promoting the importance and necessity to tackle suicide which is a concern not only in Australia but across the world. There were 224 suicides in SA in 2017. That is 12.8 per 100,000 persons. There is a Council of 13 dedicated and specifically trained persons working under the guidance of the Premier’s Department and includes the Chief Psychiatrist.
Assisting this Council are 22 Senior Executives of Government.

ROBIN
Consideration is being given to involve all 68 Local Governments (36 are involved at the moment). The aim is to start life saving considerations bringing education and training to the community. It has been revealed that there were 35,000 attempts across Australia. The subject has been brought forward to football matches and the Adelaide Show. Teabags packs have been distributed as part of the approach and locally special biro pens with attached advice have been issued. It was revealed that women attempt suicide more than men but are less successful. There were many questions and follow up discussion. on what is a very important subject.

GAWLER SUICIDE PREVENTION COMMMUNITY GROUP
In Australia suicide is the leading cause of death for males and females aged between 15 and 44. For each suicide there are tragic ripple effects for families and friends.

HOW C AN YOU HELP ? Some times when a person has deteriorating mental health they may consider suicide or self harm. If you think someone is struggling reach out and connect. Show you care and make a difference in their lives. If you think they are suicidal ask them direct and don’t be afraid to show you care. Listen and allow them to express how they are feeling. Don’t leave them alone, stay with them. Seek appropriate help. Call a crisis line or 000 in an emergency.
