Sergeant Barry commenced his sergeant session with the donation of a wooden train he had purchased when his grandchildren were young but was never gifted.  An auction was conducted with the PP Bob Ahrens being the successful bidder of a generous $200.  Many thanks to Barry for the donation and Bob for the purchase.

Guest Speaker – Angela Moore
Before continuing her life story Angela provided a brief summary of “Chapter 1” for those members who were not present for her first guest speaking spot.

Angela continued/filled in some gaps and told members about her life in Brownies, Guides and Scouts and all her other volunteer groups and her unexpected but happiness of her two children and how life changed for her and her introduction to her life as a teacher.

Angela’s main motto is “someone is always worse off”

From me, I am in awe of Angela with everything she has experienced in her life and what she has achieved and her outlook on life.  She is an inspiration and an example that you choose your destination; and not let your past dictate who you are or your future.

R100 IN SIGHT

IN THIS MONTH’S R 100 CENTENARY COVERAGE THE FOCUS IS ON PEACE. HOW WILL YOUR ROTARY CLUB CELEBRATE 100 YEARS OF ROTARY “DOWN UNDER”.
Why peace bells and peace poles?

Both concepts have their origins in Japan; peace bells in 1954 and peace poles in 1955. Following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, two Japanese gentlemen felt the need to spread messages of peace to avoid such an attack happening again. There are now over 200,000 peace poles, and 25 World Peace Bells in close to 200 countries across the globe. Peace poles carry the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in a number of languages.

Has your Rotary Club considered such an idea? What does the Gawler members think?
It is a way to publicize the club in the community and one of the many ways we can hope to bring more peace in the world.

With the aim of distributing 100 peace poles to 100 schools, sponsored by 100 Rotary Clubs Australia wide, schools and clubs involved with this R100 initiative can already be found from North Queensland to Tasmania in the South and Port Augusta in the west.

For anyone interested, a visit to Canberra could include a tour to the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell in Lennox Gardens, Canberra.

The Gawler Club can then donate a peace pole to be erected within the school grounds of one or more schools in the Gawler area.

THIS COULD BE AN INITIATIVE THAT WOULD BRING NEW MEMBERS TO THE CLUB AND ALSO PROMOTE THE CLUB WITHIN THE COMMUNITY.
