PP Dr Bruce
PP Sergeant Barry introduced Beth as president for the evening who officially opened meeting 3257 and welcomed guest Robyn Heitmann -Guest speaker and Meredith Smith guest of Dr Bruce.
PP Kathy was the only spot this evening and she reported on a couple of changes relating to the treasurer role- signatories needed updating and Jill Merchant has been assisting Kathy with the changeover to “Zero” software. These were approved by the board.
PP Steve offered to donate $300 to the ‘table fund’ if he could have some assistance of a couple of Rotarians to complete a “little” job on his property. In true Rotarian spirit he didn’t have to wait long for volunteers!
After some fellowship, Beth introduced Barry for his Sergeants session and Wheel spin before introducing tonight's guest speaker Robyn Heitmann.
Robyn is an Adelaide girl who grew up in Salisbury and has always had an interest in history. Robyn lived in London and Canberra before moving back to Adelaide.
Robyn became interested in the story of Ann Smith, wife of the founder of Smithfield. She discovered there was a lot to their extraordinary story and has written a book “At the Helm of the Empire” based on her story.
While she was researching the book she came across “The Strange Death of Mr Buchannan”, a cold case from 1839. Ann took us through the evidence and Rotarians were then asked to decide the verdict-
The presentation was entertaining and there were many suggestions for the verdict although our own PP Kathy came up with a scenario Robyn hadn’t considered but will be including it next time she presents.
Chair Beth thanked Robyn for her interesting talk and asked Pres Kyle to present Robyn with her certificate. Robyn was excited to learn that we make a donation on the speakers behalf to vaccinate children against Polio as part of Rotary’s end polio campaign.
Pres Kyle then thanked Nixon’s for catering, Geoff and Bob for looking after the attendance table and Meredith for attending he closed meeting 3257. .
From the latest Interplast newsletter Rotarians go the extra mile for Interplast
Interplast has been incredibly fortunate to have been chosen as the Partner Project of the inspirational and dynamic Carol O’Connell. Travelling thousands of kilometres with her partner, District 9790 Governor Stephen O’Connell, Carol has mobilised the sprawling and diverse Rotary District, which stretches from the north of Melbourne to southern New South Wales. This year, she has shared the Interplast story with hundreds of Rotarians and raised over $24,000 for Interplast programs!
Carol was able to meet Interplast volunteer surgeon, David Morgan, at the District conference in Albury earlier this month. There, David delivered a powerful keynote speech and joined Carol on one of the final objectives of her project — to walk 979kms over the year.
The passion and commitment of Carol, David and the Rotarians of District 9790 have been inspirational, and the results have wildly exceeded even Carol’s expectations.
The recent Changeover received excellent coverage as usual in the Bunyip newspaper. Thanks for the ongoing partnership between the club and the local paper.
Challenge yourself to brave the elements and go #OffTheGridForShelterBox
Dear ROTARY,
When disasters strike and power lines go down, families are left vulnerable, robbed of comfort, light and electricity.
ShelterBox's #OffTheGrid challenge invites you to camp out between 20th June to 19th August and experience some of the impacts that disasters have on families around the world.
This is a wonderful opportunity for friends, family, work colleagues, club members and school friends to show solidarity with those left homeless by disaster and conflict.
The ShelterBox #OffTheGrid challenge is simple. Gather your mates, set up a camp and spend the night braving the elements to support families left with nothing following disaster and conflict.
Want to step it up a notch? Choose not to use any electricity for the entire day. Want to go even further? Ration your food too!
How far you take the challenge is up to you! The tougher the challenge, the more people are likely to sponsor you and the more you will be helping people in crisis who have no shelter, no home and no access to power.
