From the President
As I sit at my desk this sunny but crisp morning, looking out over the garden, I’m reminded of how fortunate many of us are. A quiet holiday break, a warm office, a laptop, a full pantry, and the support of family — all simple things, yet things we often forget to appreciate. They’re everyday comforts, but not everyone has them, and that’s worth pausing on.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve found myself thinking more about mental health — my own, and the wellbeing of people in our community.
On 21 September, our guest speaker was Will Shave from Gawler Dads Group. Their Australia‑wide network supports fathers, especially new dads, by giving them a relaxed space to connect, share experiences, and build confidence. Whether meeting in person with their kids or joining online, dads can talk about real‑life challenges — stress, mental health, and the importance of having a support system.
Men aren’t always quick to open up, so having a place where they can talk freely and know they’re not alone is incredibly valuable.
Another moment of reflection came when I visited the Rotary Club of Gawler Light and heard Amy from Dolly’s Dream speak. Dolly’s Dream was created in memory of Dolly Everett, with a mission to prevent bullying and support young people’s mental health. As a primary school teacher, I see firsthand how these issues are affecting children at younger ages, and how bullying often plays a part in that cycle.
Both speakers reminded me how important it is to stay connected, look out for one another, and keep conversations about mental health open — whether we’re supporting dads, children, or anyone in our community who might be struggling.
This reflection is especially timely with World Mental Health Day on October 10, and our club’s own contribution coming up on 12 October, when we support youth mental health through Rotary Health’s “Lift the Lid on Mental Health” initiative. We’ll be marking the occasion with our much‑loved Hat Night, so come along wearing your brightest, funniest, or most outrageous hat. Throughout the evening we’ll have plenty of light‑hearted activities — guessing games, quizzes, games of chance, fines, and even some novelty auction items — each with a small participation fee (around 50c). So please bring plenty of coins and get involved. Every little bit helps us raise funds, share laughs, and boost our own wellbeing while supporting young people who need it most. Let’s see just how much good we can create in one fun‑filled night.
REMINDER
When we meet at NIxon's, members and guests are required to pay Nixon's directly for their meal. This must be done by card prior to 6:30. Bob and Geoff will still look forward to seeing you at the attendance table to purchase your washers by cash or card and also to select your table number.
Remember
You can help raise funds by downloading the Drakes App and selecting Rotary Club of Gawler as your preferred charity. If you still have one of the old key rings they are still accepted. You are spending money anyway so its a great way to help without costing you any extra.
Yours in Rotary Angela Moore
