Meeting Reports 3255

Meeting 3255 was the club’s President Changeover Dinner. The meeting was held at The Pavilion, Trinity College Gawler, and was attended by around 65 members, guests, family, and friends to celebrate President Anthony Barilla handing over the reins to Kyle Smith. Among the special guests for the evening were Acting Mayor of Gawler Nathan Shanks, Labour candidate James Agness, District 9510 District Governor and Past President of the club Marie-Louise Lees, and members of the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge.

The MC for the evening was Angela Moore, who kept the evening moving along. President Anthony officially opened the meeting as well as saying Grace. Past President Mike Williams gave a summary of Rotary International according to AI before offering a toast to Rotary International. District Governor Marie-Louise Lees responded to the toast and shared the news that the Gates Foundation had just announced their continuing support to End Polio. This announcement was made at the Rotary International convention in Calgary, Canada, from which Marie-Louise had returned the day before.

Following the toasts, Past President Mike Williams was once again called to the floor for his role as almoner to present a tribute to Tony Fotheringham, who passed away during the last Rotary year. He also delivered the sad news that Angela (Angie) Fuhrmann (née Clarke) had passed away on 24/06/2025 at her home in Germany. Angie was the club's Rotary Exchange Student to South Africa during 1980/81. Her parents are Past President Kevin Clarke and Elizabeth Stolz, who was also a member of our club. Mark Forgie is assisting with the repatriation of Angela’s body, and funeral arrangements will be shared later.

MC Angela invited President-Elect Kyle to introduce his special guest speaker for the evening, his grandfather and charter member Dr. Bruce Eastick. It was a wonderful moment to see Dr. Bruce being assisted to the stage by his great-grandchildren Layla and Harrison (Kyle's children). Dr. Bruce talked about the four generations of his family’s involvement in the Rotary Club of Gawler and his pride at seeing Kyle take his presidency.

President Anthony shared the highlights of his year and his pride in being able to combine the history and tradition of the club with new ideas. He then presented his awards for Service to the Club to members who had shown service above self during the year. He also presented a special award to Pete Heinrich for being our resident forklift operator—this award was a model forklift. He made special thanks to his dad, Past President Steve Barilla, who is stepping down from the board to focus on his health, although he will still be helping out, and Past President Kim Potger, who has moved to Rotary Club of Westlakes. A highlight, though, was his presentation of a Paul Harris Fellowship award to Past President Kathy Heinrich. This award was obviously a genuine surprise for Kathy, who was momentarily rendered speechless.

The final task for President Anthony was to formally hand over the reins to incoming President Kyle. Kyle thanked Antony and congratulated him on his year and shared he was looking forward to continuing the work Antony had done but also implementing his own ideas and projects. He then presented gifts to Anthony and his wife Rosene.

President Kyle then presented his board and awarded them with their certificates and pins for the coming year. At the conclusion of the evening, MC Angela invited Kyle to the stage to close his first meeting as president. Kyle thanked Angela for a great job and thanked everyone for attending the evening before inviting members to join him in repeating the Four Way Test and officially closing the meeting.

From the latest Interplast newsletter Rotarians go the extra mile for Interplast

Interplast has been incredibly fortunate to have been chosen as the Partner Project of the inspirational and dynamic Carol O’Connell. Travelling thousands of kilometres with her partner, District 9790 Governor Stephen O’Connell, Carol has mobilised the sprawling and diverse Rotary District, which stretches from the north of Melbourne to southern New South Wales. This year, she has shared the Interplast story with hundreds of Rotarians and raised over $24,000 for Interplast programs!

Carol was able to meet Interplast volunteer surgeon, David Morgan, at the District conference in Albury earlier this month. There, David delivered a powerful keynote speech and joined Carol on one of the final objectives of her project — to walk 979kms over the year.

The passion and commitment of Carol, David and the Rotarians of District 9790 have been inspirational, and the results have wildly exceeded even Carol’s expectations.
