PP Kim Potger
PP Kim opened the meeting and welcomed members and guest speaker Ian Tooley. Kim made a special mention to Shawn Lock who was attending his first meeting as a member.

Kim then called for members and director spots.
Steve Barilla thanked everyone for their attendance and help at the Gawler Carol’s. He believed the numbers were low overall, but everyone put in a huge effort to make it successful.
Next Monday Steve and Pres Kathy will attend a meeting at the Barossa Air show site to get all the information re our involvement. Please remember to keep this in your diary as we will need lots of help this day.

PP Lance Hatcher wanted to let everyone know that last week, along with 4 other trustees of the Gawler Quality of Life Foundation, he attended the funeral of Dr John Harbison. Dr Harbison was a long-standing trustee.
He unfortunately also informed members of the passing on Christmas Day of the wife of Past DG Dick Milner. Dick was a member of Gawler Rotary before transferring to Gawler Light Club when it was established.  Our Collective thoughts are with Dick and His family.
PP Leanne Clinch- reminded members that next week is the annual Bowling Game. Please make sure you indicate your attendance for catering ASAP. The meal is Schnitzel and Salad. If you have any dietary requirements this is not suitable for, please supply suggestions for alternatives.
Members were invited to enjoy fellowship during dinner before PP KIm introduced Seargent Barry for his fines’ session. Barry received lots of ribbing from members after starting his story about having a flat battery on his Harley followed by the usual Facebook funnies.
Wheel winners this week were Anthony Barilla and Alan Harris.
After a short break PP Kim introduced Guest speaker Ian Tooley.
In his introduction Kim said he and Ian had known each other since Primary school and their mothers were friends. Ian is a past principal of Birdwood and Nuriootpa High schools. His first job from Teachers college was in Whyalla. He has been a member of the Gawler Council for many years including Deputy Mayor. The last Local Council Election Ian ran for Mayor. However, his talk tonight was on his passion-Climate change.
Ian confirmed he had been involved in Education for 40 years and said it was during this time his interest in Climate change was sparked. Ian strongly believes that Climate change is Science. He agrees been politicised, but it is science. He knows that in the room there would be at least 1 person who does not believe this but he is hoping to educate everyone by providing facts and not assumptions or opinions.
Ian provided examples where people power has made change. For Example, when we started building on the banks of the Torrens River, we killed it. The Tannery etc leeched into the river and killed off the sea life and people realised we had to breed life back into it; The presence and effects of Smog in the industrial world led to the Clean air act first in London then the USA; Discussions on the  ozone Layer- “sunscreen for the environment” was prominent in the 80’s and 90’s was very popular but in 1989 the world banned the use of CFCs; the same with Asbestos-this was believed to be a wonderful building material but was later found to have detrimental health effects to many.
Ian said these are only some of the examples of big issues we have dealt with. Today’s issue is Greenhouse effect. This is where the heat is trapped into Earths atmosphere instead of being able to escape. Some of the consequences of this is warming, hurricanes, floods, fires and thawing of Glacial Masses. Ian witnessed some of these effects firsthand when visiting Alaska and Canada. Tropical diseases also on the move due to ‘tropical’ atmosphere is on the move.
What can be done? The use of green energy is on the rise-wind and solar energy. Other things we are doing well are Solar battery storage, LED lights, electric cars.
Ian has attended the Al Gore Climate Reality Training twice and has travelled to Canberra to Lobby. Ian said the answer lies in people demanding of politicians to do something. Examples where people have risen up and banded together to bring about change includes Women’s rights, 40hr working week, the stop of child labour, the demise of Apartheid.
The Q&A  session after Ian’s presentation brought a healthy discussion from both sides of the argument.
President Kathy then gave her wrap up before closing the meeting.
  • Please indicate your attendance at Bowling no later than Wednesday morning
  • 23/1/23 will be a vocational visit to the Mould Doctor -we will meet at Nixons for dinner then travel to the venue.
  • 30/1/23 will be back at Nixon’s for Dinner meeting with Committees and Board meetings.
  • Thank you everyone for the Christmas show, we raised $1961 from the auction and 275.50 in raffle tickets. Plus, the gifts donated for the children of Domestic Violence.
Kathy then officially closed Meeting 3134 with the Four Way Test

“Madison Williams who recently took part in the Rotary Sailing Challenge was inducted as a Friend of Gawler Rotary and  Shawn Lock was inducted as a member. We believe that Shawn is the first Australian born this century to become a Rotarian.
This gives Gawler Rotary the honour of having both the youngest Rotarian and the longest currently serving Rotarian in Australia.  Charter Member and Past President
Dr Bruce Eastick has given stalwart and unbroken service since April 24th 1954.  He is still an active Rotarian who seldom misses a club dinner meeting or event.”
Martin Walker who gave a very informative talk on the history of telephones in Gawler & Brian Burt
Madison & Shawn Gawler Rotary's newest members. Shawn as a full member and Madison as a friend of Rotary. It is awesome to see youth being involved in the club and Rotary in General.
Madison Williams & Mike Williams.  Dr Bruce and Shawn  are Rotary's oldest and newest members but also the oldest and youngest members
