Pres Kathy was chairperson for the evening and welcomed members inviting them to enjoy fellowship over dinner.
After Dinner pp Barry presented his usual session including the wheel spin and Bunyip roundup before Pres Kathy introduced the guest speaker.
Guest speaker for the evening was PP Brian Burt who reminded members what the Rotary Foundation was and what its function is. The flowing report was provided By Brian from his presentation.
The Rotary Foundation (TRF)
According to rating site Charity Navigator the Rotary Foundation is one of the world’s largest and highest rated charities which has been rated in the top ten charities for the past seven years.
91% of funds raised go to the Areas of Focus.
THE ROTARY FOUNDATION’S MISSION
The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.
AREAS OF FOCUS
- Water, sanitation, and hygiene
- Basic education and literacy
- Disease prevention and treatment
- Maternal and child health
- Peacebuilding and conflict prevention
- Community economic development
- Environment
The Rotary Club of Gawler has a long history of involvement with the Rotary Foundation through:
- Rotary Foundation Scholarships & Peace Scholarships
- Group Study Exchange Programme & Vocational Training Teams
- Disaster Relief Programmes – Shelter Boxes, Volunteer Teams
- Self-help projects like PNG & Solomon Islands FAIM teams, Malaria
- Educational Programmes – literacy projects, school infrastructure
- Specific Health Projects like the Timor Leste child and maternal project which cut maternal deaths from 40% to less than 5%. Also Interplast & Operation Cleft changing the lives of thousands. This project was initiated by the late PP Elizabeth Briggs.
- Fighting disease, especially Polio. Also includes many other diseases.
Where does the money come from?
- Club contributions from fund raising events
- Individual and Corporate Donations.
The Gates Foundation gives $2 to Polio immunisation for every dollar Rotary spends
- When clubs present Pau Harris Fellowships US$1,000 goes to the RF
- Centurion Club – Members give $100 per annum
- Bequests and memorial donations
Where does the money go?
Gawler Rotary proudly displays its Bronze Contributor Certificate in the display cabinet in our meeting room at Nixon’s.
At the conclusion of the Meeting Pres Kathy thanked members for attending and Brian for filling in as guest speaker with some valuable information about the Foundation.
She reminded members of the diary dates-20th Feb Visit to Taylor and Forgie crematorium; Volunteers needed for 18th and 19th of March Relay for Life; and 19th March Black Dog breakfast. Remember-Many hands make light work!
