Our Gawler Rotary Meeting 3312 on Monday 12 October was a fabulous evening focused on supporting mental health through Australian Rotary Health’s Lift the Lid campaign. Members arrived wearing an amazing variety of hats for our Wear a Hat for Mental Health theme, although there were a few quiet groans of “Oh no, I forgot!” Thankfully, Deb Williams had thoughtfully organised a great selection of hats so no one had to miss out — although those who forgot were happy to contribute a fine to help kick off the fundraising.
We were also pleased to welcome long-time friend and supporter of the club, Sally Richardson, for the evening. Sally was more than happy to join in the fun and games and commented on how lovely it was to see everyone interacting and enjoying themselves.
The evening was filled with fun, laughter and healthy competition, with members taking part in games and quizzes. Some resorted to looking up answers on their phones — some called it cheating, others preferred to call it research — but it all added to the enjoyment of the night. Mini auctions, prizes, and plenty of good humour helped create a wonderful atmosphere, and with an extra boost from the club, we raised $200.
While the evening was light-hearted and enjoyable, it also highlighted an important reality: approximately 1 in 5 Australians will experience mental illness each year. Supporting mental health research today helps us better understand how to prevent and treat mental illness for future generations of young Australians.
Thanks to the generosity of our members, Gawler Rotary will donate the $200 to Australian Rotary Health’s Lift the Lid initiative, helping to fund vital mental health research and programs.
During the meeting, PP Barry shared his plan to refresh his Sergeant’s sessions by introducing more variety. Some weeks members will be invited to share their story or tell a joke; on other weeks there will be a quiz question, and of course, we will still be entertained by Barry’s traditional Facebook funnies. It goes without saying that the Rotary Wheel will also remain a weekly feature.
In the spots, Treasurer PP Kathy reported that everyone should now have received their invoice for club dues, and asked members to let her know if they have not. Kathy also reminded everyone to please bring cash to pay Bob and Geoff for washers and to pay fines, as cards are for meals and drinks only.
In his role as Almoner, PP Mike sadly reported that since the last meeting the club has lost two past members, Hon Neil Andrew AO and Larry Cavallaro. Our collective thoughts are with their families and friends at this sad time.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and contributed. Together, we are helping to lift the lid on mental illness, reduce stigma, and encourage important conversations about mental health.
Wear a hat. Start a conversation. Make a difference.
REMINDER
When we meet at NIxon's, members and guests are required to pay Nixon's directly for their meal. This must be done by card prior to 6:30. Bob and Geoff will still look forward to seeing you at the attendance table to purchase your washers by cash and also to select your table number.
Remember
You can help raise funds by downloading the Drakes App and selecting Rotary Club of Gawler as your preferred charity. If you still have one of the old key rings they are still accepted. You are spending money anyway so its a great way to help without costing you any extra.
