Report on Meeting 3039 - August 24th
Once again there was a strong membership attendance at the meeting and Sgt-at-Arms Barry introduced President Mark as chairman. The Loyal Toast was proposed by Mike Williams and grace was said by President Mark.
- President Mark expressed thanks to Michael Barilla for money raised at the Ahrens group for donating to Rotary for funding Rotary service work. He also reported receiving a card from the staff manager at Eldercare Evanston saying thank you to the Club for its gift of $200 and endorsing the high regard held for Rotary in Gawler.
- Steve Barilla reported that the State legislation required two Covid-19 Marshalls to be present at club meetings for the purpose of ensuring social restrictions are being observed. Steve and Bob Hinderwell have been appointed for Rotary meetings.
- Wayne Murphy introduced his guest Behrooz Jafari who is qualified as an Architect and is completing post-graduate studies for a degree in construction engineering.
- President Mark called on members to choose the committee in which they believe they could best contribute to and met with the appropriate director after the meeting.
- Brian Burt outlined his plan for the Membership Meeting to be the programme for next week’s meeting. It will include club members Bob Ahrens, Ian Sanders, Dino Donati, Helen Bourne, and Colin Bazeley recalling some of their overseas Rotary experiences.
The fines session began with President Mark and Kevin Clarke winning the barrel roll, then Sgt Barry continued by telling of his visit with pat member John Bolton to Phil Fisher’s farm in the Flinders Ranges. They had fun shooting with rifles and bows and arrows. They also visited the memorial that stands in tribute to Phil’s father.
As President Mark was about to open the meeting’s topic of Club fund-raising suggestions, honorary member Mayor Karen Redman joined the meeting and was invited to address the meeting relating to the town council.
Mayor Karen spoke of the government issues that were impacting community events including the Village Fair, the Gawler Show, Christmas Carols, and Australia Day Breakfast. These restrictions required identifying those who attended to be able to trace them in case of positive test results, ticketing, social distancing, etc. In an earlier discussion with Colin Bazeley the Village Fair will be affected by many aspects that make it almost impossible to go ahead.
With the event being the main fundraiser for small community bodies there followed a lengthy discussion on alternative ways that such fundraising could be implemented.
Due to restricted meeting time to allow for committee meetings to follow, the discussion was closed, and President Mark decided that his planned programme on fundraising suggestions would be postponed to a later date.
The meeting was then closed.
