Chair PP Mark Smeaton opened meeting 3209 and welcomed members and guest John Palamountain from the Rotary Club of Darwin to the meeting.
Apologies Anthea John, Brian Burt, Colin Bazeley, John Lyons, Wayne Murphy, Lance Hatcher, Stan Roulston. Julie Tekell, Tom Kelly.

PP Mark then invited members who had information to share to come forward.
PP Steve Barilla
  • Asked members to keep 15th September free to help at the Gawler Swap meet. He will take names in the next couple of weeks.
  • Steve then entertained us with a recount of him buying petrol during the previous week because he wanted to admit being ‘unRotarian’. When he got the bowser, the attendant approached him and asked him to please wait before proceeding to fill his car. He did but when the men told him he was ok to fill up he noticed the price had gone up significantly. He questioned the attendant and asked why he hadn’t allowed him to fill up prior to changing it.
Steve wasn’t happy so left but then saw another petrol station still had it at the lower price so he filled up there. His moral to the story is-if they ask you to please wait a minute ask if they are going to increase the price!!
PE Anthony Barilla
  • Anthony confirmed Steve’s story and said he had heard it a few times that week.
  • A reminder that next week is the changeover dinner and numbers were looking good at 70+. Anthony will get Michael to send a map so people know where to go.
Everyone then once again enjoyed some fellowship over dinner.
After Dinner PP Mark introduced PP Barry Stewart to present his sergeants session.
The Wheel spin provided lots of amusement this week. Winners were, Patsy- who struggled to decide whether to take the money or the chocolates before finally deciding with everyone’s help to take the money; Barry-who asked for a respin because he doesn’t eat chocolate; Bob Hinderwell and Beth Hudman who initially had them taken away because it was deemed a line call before finally being given them.
PP Barry then presented is entertaining FB funnies and fines session before PP/ Chair Mark introduced our guest John Palamountain to let us know a little bit about the Rotary club of Darwin.
John said he was back in Gawler to celebrate his mum’s 98th birthday. His mum is still active and is the second oldest resident at her nursing home. She is still active and driving and in her words “drives the oldies around.”
The Rotary Club of Darwin has 56 members including members who are currently living in Mexico, Texas and Newcastle but it has a high turnover. The club does not put up with non-attenders and usually cull 6-7 members a year due to inactivity.
The biggest projects they have currently are the Darwin Show, where they run a chocolate wheel similar to our weekly wheel which is hugely profitable. Each ticket is $2 Every spin of the wheel wins a prize.
They run a million-dollar hole in one competition. This brings in about $30k per year and they have never had to pay out the million dollars.
They also run a bring Bali to Darwin event in the wet season because there is no other events then. This event started small but has grown in momentum and raises around $10k.
Mark thanked John for his impromptu talk and members found it interesting to learn about projects outside the box.
PP Mark then invited Anthony to close meeting 3209 with the four-way test before inviting committees to meet prior to tonight’s board meeting.
