Monday 17 June 2019 – Meeting 2998

GUEST SPEAKER – AVA KOENZEN, Rotary Youth Exchange Programme Student
"My year on Exchange"

Ava was introduced by Chairman PP Lance Hatcher and in due course requested she demonstrate the exhibited Evening Dress.  Ava advised members that she had had pleasure in producing the finished dress in approximately 5 hours.

Prior to her address Ava had provided all present with a Rotary card complete with photograph advising of her Rotary Exchange from Germany District 1810 Rotary Club of Hilden-Haan. It also provided a colourful German Badge.

Ava’s first 6 months had been with the Rotary Club of Clare since July 2018. She then transferred to Gawler for approximately 3 months each to the Lees and Heinrich families. She departs for home on Monday 24th June after what has been a very memorable and enjoyable experience.  Ava spoke about several jouneys she has enjoyed beyond South Australian boundaries. Another feature of her visit has been the SPECIAL tasks she has undertaken. For example, her Chairmanship of a recent Rotary Meeting, attendance at two High Schools studying some subjects she hasn’t previously studied, and interstate travel with other exchange students.

On a monthly basis her experiences have included the following.
July 2018 - Her arrival at Clare Club.
August 2018 - Ice Skating in the Adelaide area.
September 2018 - A visit to the beach and meeting Kangaroos and joeys
October 2018 - An opportunity to meet with other students from many different countries.
December 2018 - Temperature at home in Germany is -15 degrees C and in Australia (South Australia) 44 degrees C
January 2019 - Moved to Gawler and also volunteered for 2 days at the Scout Jamboree at Tailem Bend.
February 2019 - Getting to know new students at school and also a trip to Kangaroo Island.
March 2019 - Sports Day at school.
April/May 2019 – The YEP Safari which included visits to Cooper Pedy / Uluru / Alice Springs (where she saw lots of lizards) and visited an Aboriginal Village, diving at the Great Barrier Reef and the Sydney Harbour bridge climb.
June 2019 - Back to Gawler and then home.

This was an emotional speech of her appreciation of the experiences she has had. She thanked the two Clubs for her acceptance and to the families that have hosted her. A final comment which said it all “I love you all.” Ava was presented with a Crows beanie and guernsey.

ARE WE TRUE ROTARIANS? WHAT SORT OF ROTARIAN ARE YOU?

PEOPLE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT RARELY SIT BACK AND LET THINGS HAPPEN TO THEM. -THEY GO OUT AND HAPPEN TO THINGS

BE INSPIRED WITH THE URGENCY OF DOING. KNOWING IS NOT ENOUGH.WE MUST APPLY- BEING WILLING IS NOT ENOUGH- WE MUST DO

ONLY THOSE WHO WILL RISK GOING TOO FAR CAN POSSIBLY FIND OUT

HOW FAR ONE CAN GO?
WHEN YOU DO NOTHING, YOU FEEL OVERWHELMED AND POWERLESS. BUT WHEN YOU GET INVOLVED, YOU FEEL THE SENSE OF HOPE AND ACCOMPLISHMENT THAT COMES FROM KNOWING YOU ARE WORKING TO MAKE THINGS BETTER.

WHAT WE HAVE DONE FOR OURSELVES ALONE DIES WITH US. WHAT WE HAVE DONE FOR OTHERS AND THE WORLD REMAINS AND IS IMMORTAL. TOMORROW’S ROTARY WILL BE WHAT WE MAKE IT TODAY.

NOTHING GREAT WAS EVER ACHIEVED WITHOUT ENTHUSIASM
LET US APPLY THIS TO ROTARY IN EVERYTHING WE DO.
