  • Bob advised members that the GHS tour was in fact the following evening not next week as previously advised. Interested members please enter via bottom carpark and meet promptly at 6pm.

Chair Dave invited guests to enjoy some fellowship over dinner before inviting PP sergeant Barry to present his session for the evening.
Wheel winners this week were 1st Mark Smeaton, 2nd Julie T and 3rd Kim Potger
Barry entertained us with his Facebook funnies and Bunyip roundup before handing back to Chair Dave.
Dave introduced Jaime Harvey from The Gawler Sleep clinic  who educated us on aspects of sleep and the reasons some of us experience poor sleep.

Why We Sleep
Much of sleep is still a mystery, however we know that sleep plays a major part in our body’s restorative functions.
 Detoxification & Rest
The brain signals muscles to relax. Waste products are cleared from our cells.
Blood pressure drops.
 Hormonal secretion
Human Growth hormone is released, cells are repaired, bones & muscles
are strengthened. Hormones that control hunger are also released,
regulating the appetite.
 Immune system regulation
Production of T-Cells (the body’s defense system) ocurs, preparing us
for fighting infections and viruses.
 Memory & Learning
 Mood

The Eight-Hour sleep is a myth!
Everybody’s sleep needs are personal and can depend on
a variety of factors. Age, health state and medications will all
impact on how much sleep you require.
More important than quantity of sleep is quality of sleep.
If you are waking unrefreshed, feeling very tired during the day, suffering poor concentration, forgetfulness or headaches and morning dizziness, you may not be getting the right quantity or quality of sleep.

“Sleep Apnoea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts”.
Mayo Clinic
Sufferers often report:                                   And can be at higher risk of:
  • Snoring loudly                                            - Hypertension
  • Feeling tired even after a full                        - Heart attack
     -   night’s sleep                                              - Diabetes
     -    Dry mouth & throat                                   - Stroke
  • Impotence                                                  - Memory loss
  • Insomnia                                                    - Early death
  • Attention Difficulties
  • Fatigue, depression or moodiness
  • Nocturia (frequent night toilet visits)
  • Morning headaches
  • Falling asleep at the wheel
Dave thanked Jaime for her presentation and said he could personally recommend the clinic as he is a client there. After a short Q & A Dave asked President John to present Jaime with a certificate of thanks.
John then thanked members and guests for attending and closed the meeting with the four Way test.

A new regular column produced by PP Brian Burt

The booklet, "60 years of Service to Our Community and the Ideals of Rotary International"  states that,
“On 1st March 1954 the Rotary Club of Port Adelaide hosted a meeting in the Gawler Institute where a decision was taken to form a Rotary Club in Gawler. At this meeting 23 business and professional men indicated their willingness to become Charter Members.
A resolution was submitted by Ron Eyers and seconded by Eric Jeffs ‘That a provisional Rotary Club be formed in Gawler’.”
Representatives of the Rotary Club of Port Adelaide and those who had indicated their willingness to become members of the Rotary Club of Gawler met a week later to inaugurate the Provisional Rotary Club of Gawler.   Two men who were present at that meeting are still living seventy years later.  They are our own Charter Member Dr Bruce Eastick and former SA Governor Sir Eric Neal.
On 24th April 1954 approximately 300 Rotarians, ladies and friends were present in the Gawler Institute to see the Charter presented to the Charter President, Keith Hogben, by the District Governor of District 33, Les North from Ballarat.
The Rotary Club of Gawler had officially been born.
(At great expense, the CLUB CHARTER (Birth Certificate) will be on display at next week’s meeting.)
