Dave introduced Jaime Harvey from The Gawler Sleep clinic who educated us on aspects of sleep and the reasons some of us experience poor sleep.
Why We Sleep
Much of sleep is still a mystery, however we know that sleep plays a major part in our body’s restorative functions.
Detoxification & Rest
The brain signals muscles to relax. Waste products are cleared from our cells.
Blood pressure drops.
Hormonal secretion
Human Growth hormone is released, cells are repaired, bones & muscles
are strengthened. Hormones that control hunger are also released,
regulating the appetite.
Immune system regulation
Production of T-Cells (the body’s defense system) ocurs, preparing us
for fighting infections and viruses.
Memory & Learning
Mood
The Eight-Hour sleep is a myth!
Everybody’s sleep needs are personal and can depend on
a variety of factors. Age, health state and medications will all
impact on how much sleep you require.
More important than quantity of sleep is quality of sleep.
If you are waking unrefreshed, feeling very tired during the day, suffering poor concentration, forgetfulness or headaches and morning dizziness, you may not be getting the right quantity or quality of sleep.
“Sleep Apnoea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts”.
